The Two Sawing Tips That Changed Everything (And What They Reminded Me About Life)

One of the hardest things to master as a jeweler is sawing. It was actually the very first thing I learned, and I nearly quit that same day — it's that hard.

I must have broken eight saw blades just trying to cut out one small piece of metal. The frustration was real.

Eventually, I got the hang of it once I learned a few critical technique tips. (Important life lesson alert: if there's a skill you must acquire to do the thing, you'll eventually get good at it if you just keep practicing.) But for a long time, I still wasn't great at it. Sawing a straight line? That was going to need a lot of filing afterward to clean up the edge — and getting it straight and even really matters.

Then I learned two things that changed everything.

Loosen your grip. When you hold the saw frame too tightly, your blade drifts in the direction of your sawing hand. You're also far more likely to snap the blade. The tighter you squeeze, the less control you actually have.

Look where you're going, not where you are. When you focus on the spot where your blade currently sits, it's easy to veer off course. You have to keep your eyes on where you're headed.

And here's the thing — as a life coach, these two lessons hit me somewhere much deeper than the jewelry bench.

How often do we white-knuckle our way through something, convinced that holding on harder is the answer? That more force, more control, more effort will finally get us where we want to go? But often, the grip itself is what's throwing us off.

And how often are we so focused on where we are — the stuck place, the hard moment, the current struggle — that we lose sight of where we're actually trying to go?

Loosen your grip. Look ahead.

Two tiny adjustments. A completely different result.

Where in your life right now could you use a little less grip — and a clearer view of where you're heading?

If this resonated with you, there's more where that came from. Every week I share stories from the jewelry bench that have a funny way of turning into life lessons. If you don't want to miss one, join my email list here  — and we can keep figuring this out together. 🙌🏻
